Vasily Kandinsky was born in Moscow in 1866 and, at the age of thirty, decided to study painting in Munich. Although he travelled extensively, Kandinsky lived primarily in Germany until 1914 and again from 1922-1933, when he taught at the Bauhaus. He moved to Paris in 1934 and continued to draw and paint until his death in 1944. This volume shows many drawings for the first time and presents new insights into the artist's creative process.

'If writing art history can be scientific, this is an excellent model .... It is an achievement which sponsors, museums, collectors, salerooms and scholars will celebrate.'
