William Morris
William Morris
Linda Parry (Editor)
This major book was published to accompany the centenary exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London of William Morris (1834-96), the pioneer of the Arts and Crafts movement and perhaps the most influential designer in British history. With his socialism, artistic flair, love of nature and respect for craftsmanship, he turned the tide of Victorian England against raw 'progress' towards a respect for traditional values, and left a legacy of work that permeated the very fabric of the English home.
384 pages, 394 colour and 165 mono illustrations, cloth, 282 x 242mm

Morris's interests and activities spanned an extraordinary range: he was a poet and writer, a politican, a conversationist, and a businessman as well as a designer of brilliance and originality, and the first half of this book explores his activities in these various fields.
The second hald concentrates on Morris the artist, with essays on his interior schemes, paintings, calligraphy, stained glass, wallpapers, textiles, furniture, tiles, and his work at the Kelmscott Press.
With its 560 illustrations and lavish design, this comprehensive study will remain the standard work on Morris long after the exhibition it commemorates is over.
Linda Parry is a textile curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum who specialises in the 19th century. She is the author of 'William Morris Textiles' (1983) and 'Textiles of the Arts and Crafts Movement,' (1988.)
