The objects presented are grouped into four sections in line with the traditional forms of Indian art: sculpture, painting, the decorative arts and textiles. Sculpture is subdivided chronologically according to stylistic periods from the Pre- and Proto- historic, Maurya, Shunga, and Early Andhra Periods to the Hoysala Period.

The paintings are subdivided in the same way, spanning Early Painting to Company Painting and Folk and Village Painting. The decorative arts and textiles, dating mostly from 1650 to 1900, are grouped by medium: from metalwork and nephrite to glass, ivory and mother-of pearl; and silk, wool, cotton, and embroideries respectively.
