His fame was due not only to his consummate mastery over the crafts of painting and illustration, but also to the newly developed high-quality color printing techniques which aided the massive dissemination of reproductions of his work.

Parrish considered himself "strictly a 'popular artist'," although he studied fine art and architecture first at Haverford College and then at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy. At the Academy, he quickly melded his fine and applied art skills into his own imaginative style.

Parrish's success and renown grew as he accepted advertising and publishing commissions. It is estimated that his art delivered over one billion advertisements. Parrish committed himself to the popularization and democratization of art, viewing beauty as a form of social improvement.

The prolific Maxfield Parrish never stopped painting. Even after he happily admitted to having completed his "girl on a rock" phase, he continued to paint murals and landscapes without figures, such as the magnificent Du Pont Mural and exquisite farm and country scenes, a lovely selection of which are featured in this book.
