Carpets and Textiles
Friedrich Spuhler
The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection of classical carperts comprises every Near Eastern and Oriental country. In terms of Safavid carpets from Persia and Mughal carpets from India, it is unsurpassed by any other private collection.
In this catalogue, 70 carpets and 9 textiles are presented, each discussed in depth and illustrated in colour. Some 30 additional pieces are reproduced as comparative detail. Comprehensive introductions for each of the geographical groupings provide the reader with a complete overview of the classic oriental carpet.

Dr Friedrich Spuhler was formerly Curator of Islamic Art in Berlin-Dahlem. In 1978 he became advisor to the Farah-Diba Foundation in Teheran and set up the first Persian Carpet Museum. In 1985 he opened a gallery of antique Persian and Turkish carpets, textiles and Islamic works of art. His Publications include "Islamic Carpets and Textiles in the Keir Collection," 1978; "Denmark's Coronation Carpets," 1987; and a catalogue of the "Oriental Star" collection, 1993.
Dr May Beattie's catalogue "The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection of Oriental Rugs," published in 1972 and long out of print, described a selection of 18 pieces from the collection. Since then the collection has been expanded rapidly to include Chinese, East-Turkestan and Caucasian carpets, as well as textiles.
