Art at the Rockface: The Fascination of Stone
Art at the Rockface: The Fascination of Stone
Andrew Moore & Nigel Larken
Nothing illustrates the brevity of human life for us more clearly than an understanding of the planet on which we live. Artists over the millennia have responded to the geological environment surrounding them and tried to capture something of man's relationship to it.
This richly illustrated book examines the principal ways by which artists have explored the geology of the land - the rocks and strata, formations and fault lines - in their quest for truth.

This exploration parallels the study of the human body; the study of geology having been as long-lived as that of the human body. The roots of these twin obsessions come together in those practitioners who sculpt with the chisel, grind pigments, manipulate colour or work with graphite or charcoal. Early man drew or painted on the rock face and fashioned flint by which to live; civilized man selected stone to build, sculpt and as a symbol for worship; the invention of painting enhanced the opportunities to explore the meaning of stones as an expression of man¹s place in the universe.
Conceived as a companion to the exhibition Art at the Rockface (Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery and Millennium Galleries, Sheffield) the book is subdivided into six thematic sections, each accompanied by colour plates and descriptive texts.
