About Us

In May 2011 Philip Wilson Publishers (PWP) was acquired by I.B.Tauris and Co Ltd, the leading independent publishers of academic books in the Humanities and general interest titles across a range of subjects including history and art. I.B.Tauris has for several years provided sales, marketing and distribution services for PWP, and so the merger proved to be a painless integration of two organisations that already worked well together. All PWP staff have now relocated to I.B.Tauris’ main offices in Bayswater, London.

In its dynamic new home the PWP imprint remains dedicated to producing authoritative, finely-designed art and illustrated books of the highest quality, as it has been for more than four decades. But the move and the extra resources the merger offers also present exciting opportunities to expand upon what has already been achieved, and we look forward to adding many more splendid titles to the list over the coming years. Meanwhile, of course, PWP already has more than 700 distinguished works to its name (all those still available are listed at the back of this catalogue), including catalogues raisonnés, art monographs, exhibition and private collection catalogues, guidebooks, and specialist works on architecture and design.

PWP has a great deal of experience working with world-class institutions, and the museums with which it has published exhibition catalogues include Brooklyn Museum, The Frick Collection, Imperial War Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, Meadows Museum, Victoria Miro Gallery, New-York Historical Society, the V&A and the Walters Art Museum, among many others. PWP’s exhibition catalogues are particularly successful because they are produced not only as a record of the exhibitions they accompany, but also as highly desirable reference works of lasting value in their own right.

PWP is always looking for books on subjects previously overlooked or that have not been properly documented, and welcomes proposals from institutions and private collectors alike.

This year exciting new titles include a study of the important Delftware collection at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and Painting Canada: Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, which accompanies and exhibition opening at Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, and travelling to the National Museum, Oslo, and the Groninger Museum, Groningen. The much-lauded Watchmaking, that was reprinted last year and is already sold out, is being reprinted yet again and on the strength of this some other key items from the PWP backlist are being reissued, including Eric Ravilious: Imagined Realities and Edvard Munch: The Complete Graphic Works.
